Pongal Festival


 Today i want shares Indian Ponggal Festival that have last week on 14-01-11 until 17-01-11.

Thai Pongal is celebrated on the first day of the month Thai of the Tamil calendar. The day normally falls between 12th and 15th of the month of January in the Christian calendar.This Pongal will be celebrated mainly in Tamilnadu of India, Srilanka, Malaysia, Singapore and by Tamils all over the World like US, UK, Dubai, Australia. Pongal wishes are exchanged between family and friends, and there are celebrations within the family.

'Surya Pongal', Thai Pongal day is dedicated to Lord Surya, the Sun God. This festival marks the first day of the Tamil month of Thai and this is the day on which the celebration begins. New rice is collected on the day and cooked in pots until they over flow. The pots are decorated with flowers, sugarcane pieces and turmeric plants. With the first offering made to the Sun, the overflowing of rice is the festive occasion where people shout Pongal-o-Pongal!

Bhogi Festival on 14th January 2011.
Surya Pongal on 15th January 2011.
Maatu Pongal on 16th January 2011.
Kaanum Pongal on 17th January 2011.

On all four days of Pongal there is exchange of sweets and presents between family, friends, neighbors, employers and employees, as a symbol of unity and tradition that is passed down to new generations.
